Dear Parents,

I hope you have had a wonderful week thus far!

It has been a wonderful week of getting into various learning spaces and seeing the students engage in a variety of challenging and engaging activities where students are encouraged to think in critical and flexible ways, allowing for productive struggle.

Why Productive Struggle is important for your child's growth and development
As an elementary principal, I often observe a subtle but powerful dynamic in our classrooms: the Productive Struggle. This isn't frustration or failure; rather, it is the critical moment when a student pauses, recognizes a challenge, and begins the hard work of finding a solution. It's vital that we, as adults, learn to step back and allow our children the necessary leeway to push through this work.

This struggle is crucial for their future, nudging them to think more flexibly and creatively when faced with any problem, whether academic or social.

We recognize that not all learning is open to this kind of exploration. There are foundational areas where students simply need to achieve mastery and automaticity, such as phonics rules, basic math facts, or musical notations. These building blocks free up cognitive space. However, the majority of their school day is designed for critical thinking. Whether they are tackling a complex word problem in mathematics, analyzing themes in literature, navigating collaboration with different personalities in a group project, maneuvering friendship, or adapting their movements while performing on stage or on the field, students need to practice thinking of multiple solutions in multiple ways. When we, as adults, immediately swoop in to fix a mistake or provide the easy answer, we rob them of the opportunity to develop the resilience and resourcefulness necessary to thrive in an unpredictable world. Trust the process! When a child grapples with a task, they are building the strong mental muscles and resiliency needed for lifelong success. At home, you can also encourage your child to independently approach tasks and problems without solving it for them.

Field Trips

Learning beyond the walls is in full bloom at ISY. Last week, our Grade 2 students were treated to a visit to the Goethe Institute, where they observed and engaged in the theme Weaving Together the Bonds of Humanity. Students had the good fortune to participate in many hands-on activities that revolved around weaving.

Next week, Grade 5 will participate in an inter-school community building activity at ISM. We will enjoy a fun Kahoot competition and play other team-building games.

Finally, yesterday, 15 of our Grades 3, 4, and 5 students played an interschool basketball game against Network. I was so proud of the sportsmanship and drive exhibited by our ISY elementary students. They were excellent ambassadors!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend ahead!

ISY Chinthe Fund: Chinthe Helping Hands Clinic

A fantastic highlight of the weekend was last Saturday’s Chinthe Helping Hands Clinic. This student-led initiative, run by Elementary and Secondary students through the ISY Chinthe Fund, successfully coordinated health checkups, vitamins, and vaccinations for children from the Care to the Least Centre (CLC) and Kalihtaw School.

While our Secondary students took the lead on the clinic's medical operations, our Elementary students played a crucial role in creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere. They spent the morning mingling, playing games, and connecting with the CLC and Kalihtaw children. This interaction was a powerful first step in their service journey, building the empathy and understanding necessary for future service learning.

Our next clinic is on Saturday, December 6th, at CLC. If you are interested or want to support our students' efforts, please reach out to learn more.
