Creating Fashion from Trash

By Aindra (Grade 7), Pyone Pann, and Cindy (Grade 10)

Last week, ISY held the annual Trashion Show. This event, which happens around the time of Earth Day, is designed to showcase the talents of students while also demonstrating how waste can impact the environment. This is a major event, organized by the Green Initiative service learning groups from elementary, middle, and high school (special mention here to Arjun (grade 11) for his hard work before this event).

In preparation for the event, parents filled the boxes on the steps, and students collected trash. The materials included plastic, old clothing, styrofoam, e-waste, and cardboard. The event started with a whole-school assembly which focused the students on environmental issues. Then, the secondary students had two hours to create a design for the fashion show and create a poster highlighting environmental issues. The materials students were given are not normally used to make fashionable clothes, so the students had to be creative. The time limit pushed teams to collaborate and come up with clever designs. The elementary students attended fun workshops run by secondary school students to discuss environmental issues. Our SEASAC dancers performed an energetic dance before the event, which hyped up the crowd and created a thrill of excitement. Following the dance, the runway show began, with each model walking confidently down the runway in their unique design - using everything from plastic to old fabric and cardboard, every design told a different story about waste and creativity.

While the music, dancing, and creative costumes made the Trashion Show exciting and fun, the real goal was much deeper. Every piece of trash collected, every poster made, and every step on the runway was a reminder of the growing problem of waste in our environment. The event pushed students to see garbage not as something to ignore, but as something we can reduce, reuse, and reimagine. Here’s what some students said about the Trashion Show:

“The trashion show wasn’t just fun, but it also helped show us that we need to be more aware of how much trash we’re creating in our daily lives.”— Aindra, (grade 7)
It made me realize how trash can be transformed into something so beautiful and amazing.— Aiden (grade 8)
It was a fun way for us to see how trash could turn into art! We had a blast making the outfits.Pyone Pann (grade 10)
I was impressed with the efficiency of the students. They produced some incredible costumes and posters.— Mr. A-G
