Gaining a New Outlook
By Cherrian (grade 11)
For the recent International Women’s Day, the Hnin Si group celebrated through an assembly centered around the theme Give to Gain. The message behind Give to Gain is simple but powerful: small acts of support can create meaningful opportunities for others.
We were also honored to welcome Dr. Poht Poht Kyi as our keynote speaker. Dr. Poht is the founder of Myanmar Imperial University in Yangon. She shared her experiences and insights about her journey in education. She reminded us that progress in gender equality and women’s rights does not only come from large movements, but also from everyday actions, education, and community support.
However, International Women’s Day is not just about celebrating women for one day. It is a reminder that women’s achievements, challenges, and contributions to society should be recognized and supported every day. Around the world and within our own communities, girls still face barriers to education and opportunity due to issues such as period poverty and lack of access to basic health resources.
This is where Hnin Si comes in. Hnin Si is a student-led service learning group that focuses on supporting girls. We have conducted educational sessions to raise awareness and reduce stigma around menstrual health. We have also organized donation drives to support nunneries and vocational schools by providing essential sanitary products.
Through our work, we have seen how small contributions such as buying a rose at a fundraiser, donating, or simply raising awareness can create a ripple effect. What may seem like a small act can help provide products, education, confidence, and opportunities for someone else.
International Women’s Day may be one day on the calendar, but the message of Give to Gain is something we hope our community will carry forward every day: when we support women and girls, we are not just helping individuals, we are bringing positive change for everyone.
