Last week, ISY was delighted to welcome back Cathy Berger Kaye, a world-renowned expert in service learning. This was her third visit to ISY, and she worked with teachers and students to strengthen the connection between classroom learning and real-world service. |
When asked about her return to Myanmar, Ms. Cathy said that she “loves being back here.” She described the country as “beautiful, welcoming, and relaxed,” adding that it is always a joy to return to ISY’s warm community.
Ms. Cathy also noticed several positive changes at ISY since her last visit. She described the school as unique, explaining that “from the moment you walk in, you know you’re in a place that’s different.” She pointed to the school’s natural beauty and the vibrant displays of student work as signs of a strong learning environment. According to Ms. Cathy, teachers are also increasingly using a variety of learning strategies with students, including the MISO method, which encourages deeper research and thinking.

During her workshops with the grade 5 classes, she was especially impressed by the students’ enthusiasm. She described their energy as exciting and noted that they were “very perceptive in understanding” the benefits of research strategies.
Ms. Cathy also shared an encouraging message for the ISY community. She believes ISY is a school that “truly lives its vision,” where service learning is not just words on paper but “real action” that the ISY community does together.
