The Heart of Service Learning

By Eaindray (Grade 10, Student Leader of the Service Learning Blog)The International School Yangon aims to be a community of compassionate global citizens and lifelong learners who are a force for positive change in the world. This begins at the heart of service learning - our student leaders.

To these individuals, service learning is more than just an after-school activity. Zarah (grade 11) notes how it is an opportunity to “gain a deeper understanding of real-world issues.” While “contributing to the betterment of our community”, student leaders also develop important skills that are used beyond the classroom.

Leading a group of students from diverse grades and experiences is no easy feat - it is one that requires a lot of patience and responsibility. Angel (grade 10) explains how she has to “keep everyone on task, make sure everyone understands their role, be timely with deadlines, and understand the purpose of the group's projects.” These students have also demonstrated that being a good leader stretches beyond overseeing logistics. You have to work together with the group. As Hyebin (grade 11) says, a good leader listens to other members of the group in order to figure out “what path to take.” It is important to accomplish goals, but equally important to have fun while doing so!

And of course, with success comes challenges. Yet, our student leaders have a lot of experience coming up with solutions. Whether it is by analyzing the issue step-by-step, looking at it objectively, or simply asking for help, they treat them as learning opportunities.

Finally, on behalf of the faculty and students, I would like to extend my appreciation and celebrate the hard work and dedication shown by our student leaders. Thank you for embodying the school’s mission and vision and being great role models for the younger students. You are a great inspiration, and I believe, as Yunn (grade 11) expresses, “by taking part in something so much larger than us, we can truly feel more connected as a community.” The legacy you leave behind is more impactful than you realize.
