Learning Beyond the Classroom

By Aindra (Grade 7) and Aiden (Grade 8)

The Middle School Chinthe Expeditions were an unforgettable trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand. Students learned many useful skills and made lasting memories. During this trip, middle school students did a variety of service learning activities.

The sixth graders loved going to the elephant camp, where they learned about animal welfare issues before feeding and washing the elephants.
“Taking care of the elephants was very new for me. It inspired me by taking me out of my comfort zone. Also, the trust between the elephants and us was surprising!”  Afyanshi (Grade 6)

Every grade visited a local school where they interacted with the children and teachers through shared activities and community service. The sixth graders did multiple fun activities, such as making Thai papaya salad and playing instruments. The seventh and eighth graders mixed and laid concrete so the students can play happily in the playground without any mud. During these visits, ISY students developed a deeper sense of gratitude and appreciation for the opportunities we have in our lives.

In the seventh graders' trek, they had to split up into small groups and navigate their way through the forest using a compass and a map. Some of them got lost, but they eventually found their way by using their collaboration skills.

“We had to find our way by engaging in teamwork.” Leo J (Grade 7)

The eighth graders had a different route for their trek. They crossed rivers with small bridges and walked up steep hills. They learned about the importance of appreciating nature.

“Trekking was one of the most meaningful moments to me. It made me realize that in our rush of human development, we pay too little attention to the very thing that keeps life on earth alive.”  Aiden (Grade 8)

The Chinthe Expeditions were an experience that challenged students, built stronger bonds, and helped them learn to make a difference. Our students experienced the power of giving back and the joy that comes with it. These moments showed them that adventure isn’t just about what you see, but it’s what you learn about life and what you do to help the community around you.
