Food For Thought
By: Irene (Grade 8)
We were so excited. Finally, the day had come. The Middle School Community Kitchen (CK) service learning group was going on its first trip! We went to the Lway Kan nunnery and orphanage. It was a very joyful experience for all the participants on the trip. The main purpose of the visit was to support the community of the nunnery. We brought some freshly prepared meals and some coconut cakes made by CK members. Our other purpose was to connect with the children and gain empathy and understanding.
This article highlights three middle school students who are making important contributions to ISY’s service learning program. Of course, there are many more students doing amazing work.
Smaller groups were formed to interview the staff. The nuns gave interesting insights about their daily routines, the difficulties they face, and their dreams for the future. The ISY students and teachers were given an opportunity to take part in a Buddhist ceremony.
Dr. Hedger commented, “I was incredibly impressed with the work that went into preparing food to be shared at the nunnery, as well as with the level of respect and compassion exhibited by ISY students.”
The MS CK trip was a two-way benefit, as it not only provided assistance to the Lway Kan community but also firmed up ISY students’ dedication and their accomplishments.
This deserves celebration!
