Two Down, One To Go - MCHP's Visit to Rehma Orphanage

By: Mo Mo (grade 8), Emily and Jessica (grade 9)

What do students learn from doing service learning activities? We learn about real-world issues and the lives of other people. We also learn about ourselves.

On Saturday, 6th December, the ISY service learning group Myanmar Children’s Health Project (MCHP) visited the Rhema Orphanage to support the medical team in giving the children their second dose against hepatitis B. Some of us helped prepare the tables so the doctors and nurses could work more efficiently. We also helped comfort the younger kids who were nervous about the injections and handed out snacks after they received their shots. Once everyone was vaccinated, the children performed a song for us, and they even handed out some snacks in return. We ended the day by taking group photos together.

During the trip, we socialized with the children, talking with them and sharing experiences, establishing a comfortable environment since needles and syringes were a bit intimidating for some of them. Upon reflecting on the trip, we came to recognize that access to quality healthcare is not always available, especially for those living in more rural areas. We discussed the importance of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals - SDG number 3 is “Good health and well-being”.

Throughout the trip, we realized how similar these children are to us, although we may be more privileged than them. Just like us, they love music, sports, and socializing with their friends. These children are deserving of quality healthcare, which is exactly what MCHP strives to provide in our trips - equality, empathy, and unity being what motivates us.

The trip taught us a lot, and we look forward to future visits!
