This Bookshelf Will Make a Difference

By Leo (Grade 10)

Build for Change (B4C) is a service learning group focused on one simple idea: building things to improve our community. Instead of just talking about problems, we take action by designing and creating practical solutions for people who need them.

This year, our group has already made a real impact. We built badminton nets for our CLC partner, giving students a chance to stay active and enjoy sports. These projects may seem small, but they help create healthier and happier environments for children.

Right now, our meetings are busy with new designs. After consulting a local school about its needs, we are working on a bookshelf. This will help students organize their learning materials and encourage reading. In addition, we have designed a goalpost for the Kalihtaw school, and we plan to build and donate it soon. These projects show how simple ideas can turn into meaningful contributions.

To make all of this possible, we organize fundraising events at school. Our bake sales have been especially successful, offering food like mochi and nachos during sports events. Also, we built a buzz wire game, which raised money at the Family Fun Fair. These activities not only bring the school community together, but also help those in need.

The members in this group not only complete service, but also gain real-life skills. We learn how to manage money by selling items and using the funds for materials. We also develop skills in research, design, construction, and creativity through each project we complete.

Build for Change is more than just a club; it is a way to make a real difference. Every project we complete directly benefits others, and every person who supports our events plays a part in that impact. By supporting Build for Change, you are not only helping our group but also helping improve the lives of people in our wider community.
