Meet Mr Geoff Heney
Recently, the Blog correspondents had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Geoff Heney, ISY’s Elementary School Principal. We learned many interesting and fun facts about him that we want to share with you. Mr. Geoff joined the ISY community this year, coming all the way from a big family in Ottawa, Canada. His wife Kate teaches kindergarten at ISY. They’ve been all around the world, having taught in Korea, China, Qatar, Hong Kong, and now here in Myanmar.
Mr.Heney’s main goal at the moment is to get a deeper understanding of the ISY community and our culture. Mr. and Mrs. Heney decided to join our community because of our school's strong belief in taking action and spreading awareness on various real-world issues.
To Mr Heney: ISY’s “call to action is so ingrained within the school. It's part of the mission and vision, and it's part of the learner attributes.”
Mr Heney believes service learning helps students consider important questions: Who am I? Where do I fit within a community? What impact and value can I bring? To him, making a positive difference doesn’t have to be something huge right away. Mr. Heney aims to make a difference step by step and support students who are trying to make a difference in our community.
Mr Heney hopes students understand that change begins with small, consistent actions. He says it is important to “have that resilience to push past certain barriers. Just keep going. Believe in yourself.” Over time, those actions build a culture of kindness, service, and responsibility - values that ISY continues to live by.
