Helping Hands, One at a Time
By: Claire (grade 11), Eaindray and Leo (grade 10)
Every six weeks, the ISY Clinic provides a medical check-up and vaccinations for the children from two of our Chinthe Fund partners - the Care to the Least Center (CLC) orphanage and Kalihtaw school. This is the Helping Hands initiative.
Recently, the children came to our school and got vaccinations and check-ups done while having a fun time. In the clinic, Dr. Aye Mon, Ms. Nixon, and our trained student assistants made sure the process went smoothly. Whether it was checking names or measuring vital signs like temperature or oxygen count, the Chinthe assistant helpers were there to assist.
“I was happy to be part of this project because I could see the kids getting healthy as well as learning how to measure vital signs,” said Kyi Cyn from grade 10.
A lot of ISY students from elementary, middle and high school came to take part. All the children got lots of exercise playing basketball, volleyball and football. After that, they could do a more relaxing activity, such as rock painting or cartoon coloring. After all that activity, the children were hungry, so what could be better than custodian Ms. Christine’s delicious fried noodles?
Here is what other ISY students said:
“It was a really fun, engaging time with the kids as I helped them with rock painting and coloring. I was also happy to see them having fun" - Pinky, grade 10
“Being part of this project is something we deeply value, as it allows us to give back to the community in a meaningful and lasting way. We are truly delighted to see our high school students step up with such compassion and responsibility” said Dr. Aye Mon.
Ms Nixon added, “Their commitment and teamwork show the best of what service learning can be.”
“It made me feel good because I have never met them before" - Baptiste, grade 3
“This made me feel connected” - Yuhwa, grade 5
“I feel glad that our partners got check-ups” - Yuju, grade 3
We hope to see the same during future events, like the one on December 6th, where we’ll be traveling to the Care to the Least Center and visiting them in person. Stay tuned to hear more about the growing success of the Helping Hands initiative!
